VOLUNTEER

SHIP is a team effort by committed volunteers from the community. Individuals, local organizations, and congregations are invited to volunteer. SHIP has many opportunities for you to help in our breakfast/bag lunch program and our other special and annual events found below.

How Can You Help... Volunteer!

There are many areas where we could use your help:
  • Help prepare meals at the breakfast or lunch programs
  • Pick up and deliver food items donated by stores, schools & restaurants
  • Provide baked goods such as cookies or brownies, left over party platters or banquet foods
  • Sponsor food collections to benefit SHIP
  • Donate produce from your vegetable garden
  • Help with events such as the Annual Dinner, Food Drives and other opportunities
  • Service Hour Opportunities for individuals and groups — a great opportunity for students to fulfill their community service requirements.

Weekday Programs

Administration
Volunteer Coordinator

While SHIP has a core group of weekly volunteers, there are usually some gaps in the schedule which require the Volunteer Coordinator to fill by contacting existing volunteers and recruiting new candidates. Estimated time commitment: 2 – 3 hours per week.

Public Relations Specialist

SHIP seeks one or more individuals with writing skills who are willing to prepare press releases, write articles for the SHIP website and generate publicity via local on-line media. Estimated time commitment: 1 – 2 hours per week.

Operations
Grill Chefs

The Grill Chef arrives at about 5:30 AM to start breakfast preparations. Breakfast made to order may consist of eggs and potatoes, a breakfast meat, and sometimes pancakes or French toast. The Grill Chef is welcome to adjust the menu as SHIP resources and time allow. Estimated time commitment per visit: 2 hours.

Sandwich / Salad Makers

The weekday sandwich makers work from 6:00AM - 7:00 AM and prepare brown bag lunches for SHIP patrons to take with them. The typical lunch consists of two sandwiches, a piece of fruit, and a dessert item. The salad maker may prepare a large bowl of fruit salad for breakfast or a large bowl of tuna or chicken salad for lunches. Estimated time commitment per visit: 2.0 hours.

Weekend Programs

Weekend Lunch

The weekend teams plan, prepare and serve lunch to guests on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Teams may bring food or they may prepare dinner using items from SHIP’s pantry. Estimated time commitment per visit: Variable.
